Everyone child looks forward to summer break! No reading, writing or arithmetic. Wait a minute! Reading shouldn’t be put on hold because there isn’t school in session, and Norcross’ Mayor Bucky Johnson agrees. Reading can still be a fun activity over break, with more time to enjoy many fun stories and novels.
This summer, Mayor Johnson has come up with a plan to help make reading fun for kids! He understands the importance of literacy and wants to get kids in kindergarten through 8th grade hyped about books. So, in order to promote summer reading in Norcross’ elementary and middle schools, Mayor Johnson created The Mayor’s Book Club. Kicking it off, on Wednesday, June 4, kids can go to specified locations, check out books and read them. Upon return, each child will receive a special bookmark which can be used to redeem awesome incentives and rewards!
On Wednesday, June 4th, Mayor Johnson will kick off his summer book club, with the opportunity to earn bookmarks, buttons, stickers, wristbands, a personally autographed book, and a party at Malibu Family Entertainment Park. If that isn’t awesome enough, any child who reads three books and shows their bookmarks to The McCain Agency are entered to win a Barnes & Noble Nook! The Mayor’s Book Club will take place through July 16.
The specified days and locations where kids can check books in and out this summer are:
- WONDERFUL WEDNESDAYS:
Summerour Middle and Stripling Elementary: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Norcross Elementary: 10 a.m. – Noon
- SUPER SUNDAYS:
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church: 11:30 a.m – 4 p.m.
Mayor Johnson could use your help to make this program a success! In order to buy all the books needed and get this club launched, $25,000 needs to be raised. You can donate as little as $5 to go towards buying one book for the club, though every donation helps tremendously! Donations of gently used books are also greatly appreciated!
On Thursday June 5th, Mayor Johnson is hosting “Buffet for Books!” This fundraising event is the perfect opportunity for you to come out to 45 South Café in Norcross for an evening of fun! Tickets are $10, and every ticket will help purchase two books for the club! This ticket also includes great food, beer, wine, and iced tea! Make sure to bring your gently used children’s books and chapter books that are appropriate for elementary and middle school aged kids! Raffle drawings will also occur throughout the evening.
